Back from tour! The CD is Not Dead!

Rolled back into Kingston after a long haul from Wawa, Ontario and slowly getting my bearings, and adjusting to being back home. As usual, the tour  was a hard slog, an enjoyable ride, a test of will and endurance and patience, and a whole lotta fun all rolled into one. Thanks to the venues ( and their staff), presenters, sound techs, fellow musicians, and friends new and old who opened their homes to this weary traveler. I very much appreciate your support.

This new record is a real trip. I've never done anything where art intersected with life so much. Developing the sound and playing style of the solo show and touring it over much of the past decade gives this new album the feel of the culmination of an 8 + year art project. The audience is a large part of the process, and it feels really good to give them (and you!) an album that reflects exactly what I'm doing on stage.

Sales went really well on tour. The CD is not dead folks! If anything, I've seen an uptick in sales over the past few years. Needless to say, I am very thankful for this! As a full time musician ( performing mostly original music), merchandise sales are a vital ingredient to my survival in this business. I understand the convenience and choice that comes from streaming services ( I've used them myself), but I'm not seeing how to make money from them. And a large portion of the money I make from record sales goes directly back into my art.

I was listening to some music industry podcasts while on the road, and they were chanting the mantra of "The CD is dead. Streaming is everything." and I couldn't help but ask aloud while driving, "But how do you make money from it!" They never answered me. My own conclusion: You don't!

It is for this reason that my new record, Great Beyond, will not be available on streaming services ( except for a single or two for a sampling). If you want to listen, you'll have to buy it. I make records for three reasons: 1) artistic expression, 2) to share my music with my fans, and 3) to make money to make more records. Spotify is good for the first two reasons, but the third, not so much.

You can help the cause! There are seven days left to preorder Great Beyond ( thanks to everyone who has contributed to the preorder campaign thus far). Check out the indiegogo site for special offers such as: CD + tickets to hometown release concert, The Box Set ( a collection of 4 CDS), and a House Concert ( 1 of these left at the discounted price). For those in the Kingston area who are planning to attend the album release concert ( with The Mill Rights and Dead Root Revival BTW), the preorder site is the best option for purchasing tickets.

A couple of shows to tell you about:

This Friday, Dead Root Revival will be fired up and ready to rock at The Red Lion in Belleville, after a month-long hiatus. 9:30 PM.

Saturday, October 19th, I will be bringing the solo show ( and new album) to the Few Acres Farm concert in Russell, ON ( near Ottawa). Message me for details.

And of course, Friday, October 25th is the Hometown Album Release Concert at The Mansion in Kingston!

See you on the road and thank you for your support.

Cheers,
Tom

Have Yourself a Brooding Lo-Fi Christmas

Now available on CD Baby  you can purchase my 2011 Ep, Living Room Session.  This record is what the title indicates : songs recorded in my living room. Me, my guitar, and one microphone recorded live off the floor. Truly lo-fi. I love the simplicity of this recording and may revisit this production style in 2016.  So, if the holiday season gets you down, with its rampant consumerism, credit card debt, and surfacing of deeply-hidden family issues, my record may just cheer you up.

I kid. Actually, I really enjoy Christmas, though I could do without the materialistic aspects of it. Which strikes me as funny as I write this because I am asking you to buy my record!

But, on that subject, I was reading a post from a friend online the other day, and she said that the best gifts are those made by independent artists. This is so true! Whether it be music or art, or even furniture, supporting those who are making their own way with their craft has a real impact. First, the financial benefit for the artist. Second, the money goes straight back into the local economy. Third, the social message it sends. I support the arts. I support community. I am not a slave to the corporation by giving gifts made of pieces of plastic that have been shipped over from China.

So, swing on by CD Baby and download Living Room Session. Six songs of dark, brooding, lo-fi, anti-folk goodness. What could be more Christmasy than that!

  1. The Less You Seem To Know -  a psychotic breakdown in a big box store 3000 miles from home
  2. Par For The Course - about getting old ( the title is in tribute to my late grandmother. Par For The Course was one of her favourite sayings)
  3. A God I Can Call My Own -  an agnostic gospel song
  4. Bleed That Pig -  raping the planet is just no good
  5. Lonesome Highway - a dark secret, a hidden past, a fork in the road between calamity and redemption
  6. Never Been Seen -  quite possibly the saddest song I've ever written about what else, mortality

Found this concert in the CFRC archives...

Back in February, me and the boys ( Kevin Davidson on fiddle, Kevin Bowers on lead guitar, and Bonz Bowering on Drums) helped out the CFRC fundraising drive by performing at the launch party at Musiikki Cafe. I remembered the other day that the concert was broadcast live on the air that night. I searched the archives, and sure enough there it was.

It was a bit rough sounding. I tried to clean up the sound a bit and edited out the calls for cash from the station. It's just the music here.

It was a really cool vibe in the room that night and I'm happy to have found this document of it. Have a listen and share it around. Some songs on here that have never been recorded before.

SET LIST

1. Keep Movin' On
2. Driftin'
3. Train Keeps A Rollin'
4. Sleepy Small Town
5. Amarillo
6. Nothing But A Bad Dream (w/ Megan Hamilton)
7. The Slow Decline (w/ Megan Hamilton)
8. Seventeen Years

Weddings, Barmitzvahs, House concerts....

I'm currently booking a Canadian tour for the fall and I am looking to enlist some help in securing venues for performances in various cities/towns. If you are interested, or if you know of anyone who would be interested, in hosting me for a house concert, or to perform at a coffeehouse, church basement, backyard BBQ, tailgate party in a parking lot, sports bar wing night, old-tyme saloon, wedding, funeral, Barmitzvah, birthday party, book club, songwriters circle, etc., etc., please do let me know. And let your friends know. And let me know that your friends now know what you know.

It would be very much appreciated. This is my first solo tour in quite some time, and I am seeking out different types of venues to perform in. With TST,  we had a pretty good circuit going, but it was quite dependent on "bringing the noise" for the most part, so a lot of those venues won't be appropriate for the show I will be touring.

We are in the process of recording my new solo album right now. They are a fine collection of songs, and I am really excited about the outcome of this work. To be honest, it's the most jazzed I've been about a creative project in a long time. I think it's going to be something special and I can't wait to get out on the road and share it with all of you this September.

Here are the dates I am looking to fill and the general location I am going to be. Thanks for your continued support!

Tue. Sept.  9   - Sudbury,ON
Wed. Sept. 10 - Wawa, ON
Mon. Sept. 15 - Regina, SK
Wed. Sept. 17 - Red Deer, AB
Thur. Sept. 18 - Edmonton, AB
Sat.   Sept. 20 - Fernie, BC
Sun.  Sept. 21 - Osooyos, BC
Mon. Sept. 22 - Vancouver, BC
Wed. Sept. 24 - Salmon Arm, BC

First Listen : New Tracks From Debut Foley Mountain Playboys Album

Excited to share a couple of tracks from the upcoming debut album of The Foley Mountain Playboys. This project has been quite off-the-grid as far as any kind of web presence is concerned, so I put together a Reverbnation page and a twitter account ( @FMPlayboys)for the band today to bring us into the 21st Century. Come hang with us in cyber-countrymusicland folks. Looking at late spring to release the record. Stay tuned for a firm release date and CD release shows this summer.

We're really diggin' the ways these tracks are coming together. A nice live off the floor, down and dirty sound. Check them out and let us know what you think.

Hard To Believe It Has Been Four Years....

....since the release of the Live @ The Acoustic Grill album. Unbelievable. Time has a funny way of passing you by more quickly the older you get.

I've been reaching back into the vault recently, and preparing old albums for listening ( and download) on Bandcamp. I realized as I was doing this, that a good number of the songs on this album had no lyrics written/typed anywhere. Online or on my computer, and the hand-written lyrics have disappeared. Just had the recording and my brain to keep track of them. So, I've decided to make Bandcamp the online source for my song lyrics. I've got this album uploaded. Next up will be Never Shed No Tears.

Stop by and have a listen... and a read.

'Train Keeps A Rollin' voted the Talentcast Song Of The Week

Thanks to everyone who took a moment to vote for me on Talentcast last week. It turns out that "Train Keeps A Rollin" was voted song of the week. Pretty Cool!

Here is what that means :

* Ede FM will play the Song of the Week at least 40 times.
* All winners will be featured in the SellaBand news
* Winners from SellaBand will be in the Hot Music section on the main page of SellaBand.
* TalentCast plays the Song of the Week again in the next edition.

Not bad. Let's hope it kicks up the fundraising support a notch or two for my new album. By the way, if you buy three parts of the new project on Sellaband, you not only get the new (yet-to-be recorded) CD, but you also get an Exclusive EP (for those who invest only), and a copy of "Overdrive Express", the album that contains " Train Keeps A Rollin". Deals!

Homegrown 2013 - Introducing The Foley Mountain Playboys

Really looking forward to this Saturday night at The Royal Tavern in Kingston, when I'll have the opportunity to debut my new band, The Foley Mountain Playboys, at Homegrown Fest 2013.

The Foley Mountain Playboys (FMP) came about as a result of a few awesome shows we had doing acoustic sets as Tom Savage Trio + 1( Kevin Davidson on fiddle). The first of them being last year for Homegrown 2012 (at The Royal as well), then at the Who The Hell Is Billy Music Fest, and most recently, a great dance floor-filled gig at The Toucan. I really enjoyed what we were doing, and the sound we were getting, so I decided to start a new band, or at least put a name to this group because TST+1 doesn't really cut it. We've also added another player to the mix. Kevin Bowers joins us on electric guitar.

Having grown up in Westport, Foley Mountain has significance for me, and the Playboys part of the name is a nod to Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. There will be plenty of foot stompin' and twangin' to go around with this band, but also the odd Blues vibe dropped in there for good measure.

Come on down and check it out if you are in Kingston on Saturday night. FMP will be hosting a Hootenanny, and the band will be backing up some other great acts, and of course we will be raising money Joe's M.I.L.L.

Song #28 Week #28 - 2012 Song A Week Challenge

Week #28 - Another song with heart in the title. I think that is permitted. Springsteen "Nebraska" vibe on this one.

Be gentle with my heart
It's open and exposed
And my head can't make any sense
Of the actions it has proposed

Be gentle with my heart
I've been through the wars
Do i dare relive the sadness
that once darkened my door

Be gentle with my heart
I've given you the key
It's been locked now for so long
A lonesome detainee

Be gentle with my heart
I trust it in your hands
If you must hurt me please take it slow
No violent reprimands

be gentle with my heart
it belongs to you
and wherever time will take us
I will always tell the truth

be gentle with my heart
it's the only one i've got
Don't know if I can make you love me
But I'll give it my best shot

Song #20 Week #20 - 2012 Song A Week Challenge

Wow. 20 weeks. Hard to believe I've made it this far. Even harder to believe is the fact that I'm not even halfway finished yet.

A love song this week. Or a heartbreak song. Not sure which. Love either hit this guy like a feather gently falling on a pillow, or a sucker punch to the gut. Or maybe he had his heart ripped out, thrown on the ground, and stomped on repeatedly. You can decide for yourself.

It's a bit of a long one. I find the end packs an emotive punch so try to stick around for the whole thing.

you ever feel like you've been knocked off your feet
you ever feel like you're incomplete
without that certain someone by your side

you ever feel like you are out of control
you ever feel like there's nowhere to go
without that certain someone by your side

you ever feel like you've lost your way
you ever feel like there's nothing to say
without that certain someone by your side

you ever feel like there's no more you can do
you ever feel like you'll never get through
without that certain someone by your side

why can't I let it be you

you ever feel like you're running away
and there's no confidence you wouldn't betray
without that certain someone by your side

destiny is a hollow dream
you bought into this pyramid scheme
without that certain someone by your side

why can't I let it be you

Song #19 Week #19 2012 Song A Week Challenge

Last week I got a bit political. Okay, I got a lot political...

This week we are back to our regularly scheduled programming of the wrong side of the tracks, drug use, despair, and death.

This song is about two friends who grow up together. One becomes a drug addict. The other a drug dealer. One of them ultimately pays the price for the path they've chosen. Or perhaps they both do.

As always, if you like it, share it. Or even go to the bandcamp site and download it.

Cheers,
Tom

he's got a 10 dollar suit
and a pistol he can shoot
and a ride to somewhere else
where he ain't feeling sorry for himself

he's got a one track mind
and his mind is keeping track
of everyone who let him down
everyone who paid him back

you've got a 100 dollar pair of shoes
and a feeling like you can't lose
cause if you lost everything
you end up back at the beginning

Again. with your old friends
Standing on the corner and shooting the breeze
you're the shepherd watching over his flock
the bishop of the arch diocese

CHORUS
your the master of your domain
this corner is your kingdom and that's gonna remain
nobody can ever take that away
now is forever and that 's how it's gonna stay

you were friends growing up
he got the hard times , you got the luck
most folks can't choose their path
they take a look at their surroundings they can do the math

He was sinking low, you were rising high
you drifted apart as the years went by
back then you would never say
he'd be back again to take everything away

CHORUS

he fell deep down in that hole
meanwhile you seemed to be on a roll
methamphetamine fuelled his need
you controlled the supply and fed your greed

one day the sickness got him
his heart was weak, his eyes sunken in
he put on his $10 suit
and no one could shake from his pursuit

he shot you dead were you stood
toppled the king of the neighbourhood
nobody can ever take that away
now is forever and how it's gonna stay

CHORUS

Song #11 Week #11 2012 Song A Week Challenge

This whole crazy thing started when Ross Neilsen and I were joking around on Facebook, and here we are 11 weeks later, still truckin' along. This week, a special surprise guest joins me for my song of the week. The man himself, Ross Neilsen!

Those of you who have been following the challenge, know that Ross has been writing a song a week as well. He played a show in Kingston on Friday and crashed over in the jam shack, so Saturday morning we shot this video. I had just woke up, hence the bedhead I'm sportin'. You can't fake that stuff man.

Ross & I hadn't actually met in person before Friday. We've helped each other out the past couple of years (via the internet) with finding gigs and stuff, and have seen each other's posters at various venues across the country, but never actually met. The internet is cool that way.

Enjoy the video. It's not framed very well, you can't see Ross' fingers flyin', but I think you can pick up what we're puttin' down.

Song #10 Week #10 2012 Song A Week Challenge

We're into double digits now. This is getting serious!

This week I've shifted genres again, to a sort of Folk/Soul style, and there's a good chance I've ripped off Hall & Oates in the process. This is one of the dangers of songwriting. I could see this tune being built up with horns, background singers, etc. This tune is in open G tuning, same as last week.

It's called One Day At A Time, but is in no way a tribute to Ted Knight or Valerie Bertinelli.

Enjoy, and as always, I'd love to hear what you think through Facebook, Twitter, or right here on the blog.

gonna take it one day at a time
don't know where i'll end up no no
no no no x 2

this world can bring you down
don't worry baby
it won't be long
you'll be coming up for air
you can't make it right
if you've never been wrong

i'll be standing right beside you
your hand in mine, we'll find a way
we may never have forever
but we'll do what we can with today

and in my heart you know you'll always stay

CHORUS

we're all searching for the answer
sometimes all we need to do is open our eyes
take in everything around us
give our dreams a chance to actualize

you never know what is meant to be
what'll be outside your front door
when everything is said and done
don't be asking yourself if you could've done more

you know that we won't be getting an encore

CHORUS

KINGSTON TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH

A K-TOWN TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH

A Joe’s MILL concert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Joe’s MILL is proud to present A K-Town Tribute To Johnny Cash on Friday, February 24 at The Mansion, 506 Princess Street. Performers include Tom Savage Trio (acoustic), Jon McLurg, Lia Dawson & Anna Robertson of The Lady Racers, and J.T. & Nicky Pickins of Liquorbox. Doors open at 9 PM, tickets are $10 at the door or online at www.joesmill.org.

Johnny Cash, a.k.a. The Man in Black, would have turned 80 on February 26. As one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, we felt there was no better time to pay tribute to his amazing legacy, which includes being inducted into the Country Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Gospel Hall of Fame. Four of Kingston’s most talented folk and country acts will each play a short set of songs from his amazing 48 year career.

The Joe Chithalen Musical Instrument Lending Library (Joe’s MILL) is a registered charity operating in Kingston at 559 Bagot Street. Joe’s M.I.L.L. currently has over 450 items available to borrow and enjoy, including guitars, keyboards, drums, horns, violins, percussion, exotic instruments, and much more - and just like a regular library, it's all free! Our lending and teaching programs sustain music appreciation, knowledge, community enrichment and provide opportunities for youth and adults to meet their full potential.

Week #4 Song #4 - 2012 Song A Week Challenge

Since this challenge started, we've been joking around, saying "Only 51 more to go. Only 50 more to go...", and that gave me the idea for this song, "49 More To Go". Actually, there was only 48 more to go when I finished writing this, but it took a week for the one line to turn into a song for me.

This tune is done in a Bluegrass style. Or an old folk song style I guess. I overdubbed banjo and lead guitar on it as well.

Hope you enjoy it, and as always, please leave a comment here on the blog, or on Facebook or Twitter, to let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Tom
