Shows starting to happen + Overdrive Express Deluxe (previously unreleased music)

I hope you are enjoying the summer, and taking advantage of the loosening of COVID restrictions, by taking in some live music and supporting your local restaurants and businesses. It has been a long haul this past 16 months! Shows are starting to happen, and while it is going to be some time before the schedule is full again, there is hope on the horizon.

Here are some events coming up in the Kingston area:

July 24th - Tom Savage and Kevin Davidson at Spearhead Brewing (2-5 PM)
August 1st - Savage Family Band at the Hotel on Wolfe Island (1-4 PM)
August 7th - Tom Savage's Surprise Mystery Band! at the RCHA(7-10 PM)
August 15th - Savage Family Band at The Mansion(3-5 PM)
August 21st - AnnFest
A celebration of life for my Mom, Ann Savage, who passed back in May. COVID wouldn't allow us to honour her wishes at the time, so we had to wait. Friends of Ann, Johnny, and family are invited to The Cove for an afternoon filled with music, laughter, and no doubt some tears. On stage with myself will be Bonz Bowering, Kevin Bowers, Mike Corrigan, Kevin Davidson, Richard Piche, Tony Silvestri, plus Benji Savage, and other musical guests. Geoff Chown will be providing the sound. There will be a cash bar and some complimentary eats. 2 PM.

August 25th - Z.A.M.F.I.R
August 28th - Hosting the Z.A.M.F.I.R afternoon jam(3 PM)
September 10th - Dead Root Revival Returns! Joel Stone Park in Gananoque, featuring Tony Silvestri on keyboards
September 17th - Hosting the Spearhead Open Mic (7-10 PM)
September 18th - Savage Family Band in Market Square (6:30-8:00PM)
September 26th - Savage Family Band at the Mansion ( 3-5 PM)

Looking forward to playing music and seeing friends! : )

Recorded live off the floor at The Mansion, in Kingston, Ontario, this album truly showcases the Alt Country, Cowpunk, Rockabilly, and Blues stew that the band conjured up in their years of touring back and forth across Canada. It was fun to go back and listen to these tunes. You can hear the seeds of Dead Root Revival being planted.

Let's head down the sonic highway for another hit of good ol' fashioned Dirt Road Rock and Roll!

1. The Wheel Still Turns
2. Train Keeps A Rollin'
3. 49 More To Go
4. Amarillo
5. Lunatic Baby
6. Down in the Flood
7. We're Older Now

NEW MUSIC IN THE WORKS

I want to send out a big thank you to all the Savage Song Supporters who have been there for me during this pandemic by subscribing to my Bandcamp, and to all fans who have purchased albums over the past 16 months as well. I have been staying creative during this time, working away in my home studio, and my new album is nearing completion. I am really looking forward to you all hearing this record because it is your subscriptions(and album purchases) that have funded this project.

I am also incredibly grateful to have received a resiliency grant from the City of Kingston Arts Fund to help put this project over the finish line.

Still some finishing touches, but I hope to reach completion this Fall. Stay tuned!!

SAVAGE FAMILY BAND - GOTTA SLOW DOWN

Music is my religion. Over the past 16 months, COVID has really turned the world upside down. Musicians have been unable to work. It has been a weird holding pattern. The uncertainty can lead to incredible anxiety, so it is important to try to live in the moment as much as we can, and not get too caught up in the things we can't control.

"Gotta Slow Down" has become my mantra. Breathe deep and enjoy the sunshine!

This performance is from our set for the Homegrown Live Music Festival, which raises funds for Joe's MILL ( a music instrument lending library in Kingston).
We had the pleasure of having Chris Brown sit in with us for our set at the hotel on Wolfe Island. Amazing!

Enjoy the sunshine everyone,
Tom

Planting the Seeds and Reviving Dead Roots

It was another successful run out to Vancouver and back in September and October, albeit with more snow than I've ever seen on a Western Tour in the Fall. I missed the 30 cm dumping that Calgary received by a day, but managed to enjoy a six hour drive through a snowstorm in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Two tracks for the tires to fit into with a foot of snow in between and on either side. An adventure with the all seasons on. Kept my distance from the cars fish-tailing in front of me and all was good.

Thanks to everyone who hosted and promoted shows, shared the stage with me, fed and watered me, and gave me a place to lay my weary bones. I couldn't do it without you!

Dead Root Revival
Many musical happenings in November, kicking off with the first shows for a new band. From the ashes of what was the Tom Savage Trio, comes Dead Root Revival. A change in band name and a change in musical direction. Leaving the Country-Rock sound that fans became familiar with from The County Line (2008), and focusing more on a hard edge Blues sound, with elements of Rock and Jazz, and introducing more instrumental numbers into the set list.

We head out on the road for a few shows this weekend in Simcoe, Sarnia, and Toronto. Check out the facebook page for event details.

Another reason for the name change is to allow us to have more than three people in the band. I'm hoping that Dead Root Revival will end up being a music collective, where musicians will come to share the stage from time-to-time, and contribute to the material. The first opportunity for this will be when Tony Silvestri joins us on keyboards for our show at The Wooden Boat Shop in Gananoque on Saturday, November 24th.

Plant The Seeds Initiative
To celebrate 10 years of HomeGrown, with the support of The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area, and other sponsors, free and discounted concerts, valuable tutorials, studio time, professional recording and videoing of your band, jamming opportunities, craft beer and more is happening on Nov 8-10th. The Plant the Seeds Initiative (www.planttheseeds.ca) includes:

Nov 8th-Screening of “Live In Kingston” with pre-screening stage performance by Paper Ladies

Nov 8-10th- Downtown Jams- Country/Blues/Classic Rock /Celebration of Joe’s Music/Celtic/Community Sing-Alongs

Nov 10th- Concert featuring Tom Savage, Needless Love Endorsement, The Wilderness, and Major Love

Nov 10th (mostly)- Musician Tutorials covering voice, sound engineering, business skills, songwriting, home studio recording, equipment, and live video and audio recording of local bands and free studio time.

I'm excited to be taking part in "The Music Biz" workshop on Saturday afternoon, and performing (with full band) at the concert finale. If you're a Kingston musician ( and you don't have a gig) or a music supporter, you need to be at this show! Come celebrate what, we as a community, have accomplished over the past decade. When I travel around the country and tell people about Joe's M.I.L.L., they are truly amazed (and envious) of what we have here in Kingston. Cheers to that! Let's party!!

Download 'The County Line' For Free
The Tom Savage Trio may be no more, but the music lives on...even if it is out of print. I sold out of the Overdrive Express album while on tour (contemplating another pressing), and I sold out of The County Line long ago ( no plans for another pressing). Recently, however, I've added The County Line to NoiseTrade for free download ( with an option to leave a tip for Joe's M.I.L.L. which I do encourage). Head over and download your copy of the album today!

Review of 'The County Line' from Americana Roots
Kingston, Ontario’s Tom Savage fourth studio album called The County Line recently founds its way to my ears. Even though it is a 2008 release it deserves your attention if you haven’t heard it. This is the first release under the Tom Savage Trio name. The trio consists of Tom Savage – guitar, vocals and mandolin; Geoff Chown – bass; and Sandy Mackenzie -drums, backing vocals. Think of them as a modern day Americana power trio, at least on this disc. While previous releases from Tom (solo) have been more acoustic, this disc is plugged in and rowdy!

There are nine high octane cuts on the disc, which opens in a hurry with Leaving In A Hurry. The highlight of the disc is the title track, with a guitar attack I imagine must be great to hear live! Perhaps speaking of himself, or maybe some of his obvious influences (Neil Young) is the line from the track Old Rock ‘N’ Rollers:
“Old rock ‘n’ rollers never die, they just keep rollin’ on”

The only time they slow down for a breath is on Tired Old Cliche. Then its back to full speed and on the road for 48 Hours. Then like a good power trio, they end with the lengthy tune Arizona, which features a long power chord fade out ending that even does fade out and return! I held up my lighter when it was done!!

If you like your Americana amped up, i.e. The Bottle Rockets or Drive-By-Truckers then you are sure to like this disc, yet another stellar release from our neighbors to the North! -Don Zelazny

One From The Vault : Barstool Conversations (Live)

I was going through my music over at Reverbnation, adding some new solo recordings, and deleting some older tracks, when I stumbled across an old live jam of Barstool Conversations recorded at the Wild Stallion in Kingston some years back. I thought I'd share it with all y'all. It's pretty kickin'! You can download it if you like ( for free).

2014 : The Year Of Creative Possibility

Incredibly excited about this next calendar year, for it will be filled with a multitude of creative projects for me. Since the creative surge that produced a string of albums, Never Shed No Tears (2006), TST's The County Line ( 2008), and Live @ The Acoustic Grill (2009), I have definitely dropped off in my frequency of releasing albums, with the Internet-only EP Living Room Session (2011), and the limited edition release of TST's Overdrive Express (2012). The latter two albums were very much less involved projects. They were experiments, in a way, of alternative methods of recording and releasing albums.

I think 2014 is the time to get back on that horse. I'm looking at the possibility of releasing three different albums with three different groups. In fact, the process has already begun, with our recording of the Foley Mountain Playboys last month. A great session that sounds really promising.  Also, we've had tracks for the Aldous Huxters record down for over a year. Will 2014 be the year when this project sees the light of day? I certainly hope so. A great collection of songs there that deserve to be heard.

Last but not least, 2014 will also the release of my first (studio) solo record since 2006's Never Shed No Tears.

More on this project in the weeks to come.

Add my live show schedule to all of these projects, and one might think I've got too much on my plate, but I say, "Bring it on!!".

Currently fundraising for my solo album on Sellaband. From now until the end of December, I will personally match any contribution towards this project. i want to wrap this up so I can concentrate on the music.

Let your ears chew on this, boys and girls!

Haven't listened to this track for awhile. Some nice, chunky, crunchy, slippery, slide-guitar jams here. This is always a lot of fun to play live. Enjoy!
