2020 : Year of the Revival

The release of Great Beyond in October felt like the culmination of an eight-year long art project. So many miles on the road, so many shows, and years honing my approach to the solo performance. I'm proud of the recorded result of my efforts.

Toward the end of 2018, I began to feel the call of rock and roll again. Dead Root Revival was born, and since that time, the band has garnered more and more of my creative focus. This is why, in 2020, I will be taking a break from solo touring, and focusing on developing the DRR sound, and performing more shows with the band. I will still be performing solo shows in Ontario, and if anyone wants to offer me a grand a night to go on tour as a sideman, I would be happy to change plans! 😄

The release concert for Great Beyond made for a very special evening, bringing the two very different facets of my creative output together in one show. For many Kingston fans, it was the first time they had seen the solo performance, seeing as most shows over the years had been on the road. Then the other side of the coin: Dead Root Revival hit the stage (after a stellar set from our friends The Mill-Rights)! We were fortunate to have Geoff Chown on sound that night. He also was there to record our set. The resulting recording captures the band at its best, and where it belongs: On stage powering through some epic jams!

To be released on March 2nd, DRR Live : Volume I will bring you to that show. Come rock out with us again and again on CD or digital format ( Yes, this album will be on Spotify, etc. despite my ongoing protestation of the streaming platform.) Our hope is you will purchase the live album to help DRR raise funds for a future studio release. The plan is to release a couple of live records before the studio release, in order to give fans new music, and to keep feeding our musical engine(the band bank account!!).

(Side Note: DRR is a band that likes to jam. Every show is a different musical journey. We encourage "taping" and sharing of shows. If you want to bring mics and recording gear to shows, please feel free. We only ask you don't obscure sight lines of audience members.)

On Friday, March 13th, we will be celebrating the release of DRR Live : Volume I with a show back where it all went down: The Mansion in Kingston, Ontario. Get your tickets here
. Connor Poulain opens the show, then Dead Root Revival hit the stage. The band will feature Tony Silvestri on keyboards, Daniel Chalmers on congas/percussion, Paul Stacey on saxophone, Richard Piche on bass, Bonz Bowering on drums, and myself on guitar and vocals. Powerhouse!!!

Doors at 8 PM. Tickets are $10 in advance/$15 at the door ( tickets are available at The Mansion or from me in person. Hit me up at open mic at the Rose & Crown).

14 year old Rocks Market Square

This summer my teenage daughter and I spent many hours practicing songs in order to build our repertoire to hit the streets of Kingston busking.
With only a year of bass lessons, she is a quick study. I anticipate we will see her performing with her own band in the years to come. As she recently stated, "it will be nice to play with people who aren't old." Here is a short video of Bella on bass, Bonz Bowering on drums and myself this past Labour Day in market square.

Pre-order "Great Beyond" Today

Excited to share with you that my latest album, "Great Beyond", will officially be released on October 15th! This record is a unique representation of my live solo show, recorded with only me and my guitar, live off the floor at North of Princess studio in Kingston, Ontario.

Sneak Peek: Have a listen to "Slow Learner". A slide guitar number from the album now streaming on Spotify.

For much of the past decade, I've traveled around Canada and the USA performing solo. Me and my guitar (or guitars rather...occasionally mandolin) up on stage, or in someone's living room, without a net. After touring with a band for many years, it was definitely a big change. It took some time to develop my approach to performing solo, and the kind of energy I wanted to bring to the stage. Ironically, in the end, I found approaching a solo show in the same way as a full band concert was the way to go. The thing is, I didn't have the band to help create that energy with me, so it required a commitment from myself to push that force out into the crowd each and every night. It also needed me to approach the playing of my acoustic guitar in a more aggressive, percussive fashion. Playing chunky rhythms and lead licks simultaneously.

This is a gift to those of you who come to my solo shows and want to take a piece of that experience home with you. For those who haven't had an opportunity to take in one of my solo shows, this is what it sounds like. I hope you enjoy it. The pre-order campaign has begun. Sign up for your copy of "Great Beyond" today! Check out the Indiegogo site for special offers such as "The Box Set" and "Concert For Two". I'll even come play a concert in your living room in exchange for your support!

For fans in the Kingston area that plan to attend the hometown release concert at The Mansion on October 25th, be sure to take advantage of the CD + Concert ticket offer on Indiegogo (a 37% savings!). This show includes The Mill Rights and Dead Root Revival on the bill, and will be a truly amazing night. Don't miss it!

Pre-order New Tom Savage Record Today!

Calling on all of my friends and fans, I'm so excited to share with you the news of my impending album release. My eighth record! I think you guys are really going to dig this music. A bit of a shift in styles for me, more of a pop/indie vibe on some of the tracks. I'm very proud of how this record turned out. Muchos gracias to Zane Whitfield, Dylan Lodge, and Phil Bova for sculpting the sounds.

And the band! Oh my God! It's a pure joy to hear the keyboard mastery of Tony Silvestri on this record. In his element, with Fender Rhodes and Hammond Organ as his tools. You can't beat those tones and the skill with which he manipulates those instruments.

Anyone who has seen Bonz Bowering perform live know that the 'Animal' t-shirt he sometimes wears certainly befits his on stage persona. We did our best to capture some of his lightning in the recording bottle on this project. Ultimately, I was most impressed with his tasteful, thoughtful approach to the songs. Chills.

My childhood friend, Seamus Cowan, rounds out the band. Seamus, a late bloomer by musical standards, came to my Mom's house in Westport at the age of 18, looking for bass guitar instruction. After showing him a couple of Led Zeppelin and Hendrix tunes, my most important instruction was to send him on to Zak Colbert (legendary Kingston bassist), where he soared to the depths of the low end. So happy to work with Seamus on a project after all these years. His tone and approach are amazing. Not to mention his impeccable harmony vocal work ( and one helluva scream!!).

I've got an LA-based radio promo team ready to push the songs to stations across North America. I'm hiring a publicist to spread the word to the print media. This costs money. Lots of it! I need your help friends. You can pitch in to help the cause for as little as $5! https://www.gofundme.com/tomsavagealbum8
Please share and help spread the word!

New Album on the Horizon

It's been an excruciatingly busy time over the past few months. This is good though. The April US tour was a heavy one and a bit of a hard slog. Many a Walmart parking lot and too much fast food. The schedule was chock full and there was not much time for sightseeing...unless you count the interstate rest stops. Such is the glitz and the glamour of the independent touring musician. That said, many interesting characters met and many songs to be harvested. And that is a very important factor for why touring is important. Honing the craft, shaping the songs, and finding the stories. It damn sure ain't about the money.

Speaking of songs and stories, upon returning from the US tour I headed into North Of Princess Studios the last week of April to record with my good friends Tony Silvestri, Bonz Bowering, and Seamus Cowan. A lot of it live off the floor, it was a spirited session, and I think you all will be very pleased with the results. It's a bit of a different direction for me and I hope you are all willing to take the trip. The album is scheduled for an official release in October, but I hope to have copies available for MUSICWestport in August (where I'll be performing with the band) and for my Canadian Tour in September.

Early May saw the release of Al Duquette's new record, Tales of the Wild West. A project I had the pleasure of acting as producer on. Al has lived a life and his experience and authenticity comes through in the way he delivers his songs. There is no pretence here. A beautiful collection of songs that will fit nicely between Hank and Lefty on the shelf. Head over to Bandcamp and download your copy today.

Early June was all about the East Coast of Canada. Always good to get down there and catch up with friends, and perform for friendly faces. Highlight of the tour was a Monday night concert in a little church in Alma, NS. Google didn't even know where it was! Great acoustics and good vibes.

That's it for now. I'll be around the Kingston area for the summer. check my site for dates, and stay tuned for more details about the new record.

Found this concert in the CFRC archives...

Back in February, me and the boys ( Kevin Davidson on fiddle, Kevin Bowers on lead guitar, and Bonz Bowering on Drums) helped out the CFRC fundraising drive by performing at the launch party at Musiikki Cafe. I remembered the other day that the concert was broadcast live on the air that night. I searched the archives, and sure enough there it was.

It was a bit rough sounding. I tried to clean up the sound a bit and edited out the calls for cash from the station. It's just the music here.

It was a really cool vibe in the room that night and I'm happy to have found this document of it. Have a listen and share it around. Some songs on here that have never been recorded before.

CD Release Concert This Friday is Also A Book Launch

Come out on Friday, October 24th to celebrate the release of my new solo album. Very proud of how this record turned out and it's already receiving some great reaction from across the country. We'll be playing the songs from the album live for the first set, then we will break out the epic jams for the remainder of the evening.

Kevin Bowers' will open things up with a reading from his new book " Travels For The Seriously Curious".

$10 suggested donation or PWYC for the cash-strapped, under-employed. The Show will take place in The Wine Cellar at The Mansion. Show starts at 7:00 PM.

About "History Of A Common Man"

It has been eight years since Tom Savage last put out a solo studio recording. An artist who follows where the muse takes him, Savage spent much of the last decade rolling down Canadian highways with his rock and roll trio, playing it loud and proud, and producing a Canadian Country-Rock classic in the process with Tom Savage Trio's 2008 release, The County Line.

History Of A Common Man continues Savage's exploration of Folk, Country, and Americana genres. From the teenaged lament of Skinny Kid to the under-medicated psychotic ramblings of Take The Wheel And I'll Steer, from the road-weary musician in Rougher On Me to the tear-drenched Country of All Over You, History Of A Common Man finds its stories in people who live on the margins. Outsiders looking for their place in the world.

Have a listen to "History Of A Common Man" on Soundcloud. Please click "Like" and share.

About " Travels For The Seriously Curious"

Take a ride through the Bible-Belt, catch authentic blues music in a Mississippi juke joint, drink Budweiser with a member of the KKK, argue the merits of Wal-Mart and evolution with a radical Mormon. Go to a surreal cowboy party and attend an authentic striptease, canoe over drowned cities and find Puritan ghosts in high-lonesome harmonies. This trip is for anyone with a romantic soul that feels hemmed in by the day-to-day world of institutions, politics, relationships, and jobs. Travels for the Seriously Curious challenges limitations and romances potential by applying the process of creativity to the pen, the road, and to life. It pulls on the tangled knot of fear and prejudice that twists in the heart, and rolls out a map of the America that shapes us.

Foley Mountain Playboys in Westport!

This Sunday ( June 1st) The Foley Mountain Playboys will be heading to The Cove in Westport, Ontario to perform at the Sunday Roots Matinee, from 1-4 PM. We hope you'll take the drive out to Westport and join us for what is sure to be a foot-stompin', rip-roarin' afternoon of good 'ol country music. Most of this music is new and original, but everywhere we play folks remark on the timeless sound of the music, and how the songs could've been written by Willie, Merle, or Hank. And to that, we say thank you very much! That is what we are going for.

Come see and hear for yourself...and don't forget your dancing shoes (or cowboy boots)!

Day Of The Pig / Night Of The Toucan

The numbers have yet to come in, but by the turnout on Saturday, it looks one of the best years yet for Homegrown Live. Great to see! Good job Kingston!

I dare say that the Foley Mountain Playboys made our share of new fans on Saturday night at the Royal Tavern. We pumped out  a 2 hour set and the crowd was begging for more. Yeehaw! It was a great way to celebrate one year together as a band.

And the cool gigs keep on coming for the FMP. In fact, on Saturday May 17th, you have not one, but two great opportunities to check out the band. In the afternoon, we are playing at Seed-To-Sausage for their Day Of The Pig celebration with Kyra & Tully and The Huaraches.

Beer. Sausage. Music. Sun. Fun!!

Then, in the evening the Foley Mountain Playboys are heading back to Kingston to lay down our country music jams at the Toucan. Sharing the bill with us is our good friend from Winnipeg, JD Edwards, who is touring with another talented singer-songwriter, Faye Blais.

That's a full day of music right there Folks! Hope to see you out !

First Listen : New Tracks From Debut Foley Mountain Playboys Album

Excited to share a couple of tracks from the upcoming debut album of The Foley Mountain Playboys. This project has been quite off-the-grid as far as any kind of web presence is concerned, so I put together a Reverbnation page and a twitter account ( @FMPlayboys)for the band today to bring us into the 21st Century. Come hang with us in cyber-countrymusicland folks. Looking at late spring to release the record. Stay tuned for a firm release date and CD release shows this summer.

We're really diggin' the ways these tracks are coming together. A nice live off the floor, down and dirty sound. Check them out and let us know what you think.

One From The Vault : Barstool Conversations (Live)

I was going through my music over at Reverbnation, adding some new solo recordings, and deleting some older tracks, when I stumbled across an old live jam of Barstool Conversations recorded at the Wild Stallion in Kingston some years back. I thought I'd share it with all y'all. It's pretty kickin'! You can download it if you like ( for free).

Sunday Song Summit

Let's hear it for live music on a Sunday afternoon! Great idea! And The Living Room (upstairs at The Mansion) is a great venue for it. The Sunday Song Summit has been going on for a few weeks and, by all accounts, has had some great performances and has been well-attended (which is of great importance to keep these kind of events going). Each week there is a featured songwriter performing and guest musicians are encouraged to come sit in. Last week I was one of the guest musicians ( had a great time). This week I am the feature performer.

I'm calling on all my Kingston musician friends to come out and make it an afternoon to remember. And for all of those who tell me that they would love to come to a show but it always starts too late, here is your chance! This thing goes from 4-7. Bring the kids( I brought mine last week)! Bring Grandma ( I'd bring Grandma, but sadly she is no longer with us. But if she were still alive, she'd be there)!

Thanks to Derrick Claridge for coming up with this idea. Looking forward to sharing my songs on Sunday. Also looking forward to some epic jams!

2014 : The Year Of Creative Possibility

Incredibly excited about this next calendar year, for it will be filled with a multitude of creative projects for me. Since the creative surge that produced a string of albums, Never Shed No Tears (2006), TST's The County Line ( 2008), and Live @ The Acoustic Grill (2009), I have definitely dropped off in my frequency of releasing albums, with the Internet-only EP Living Room Session (2011), and the limited edition release of TST's Overdrive Express (2012). The latter two albums were very much less involved projects. They were experiments, in a way, of alternative methods of recording and releasing albums.

I think 2014 is the time to get back on that horse. I'm looking at the possibility of releasing three different albums with three different groups. In fact, the process has already begun, with our recording of the Foley Mountain Playboys last month. A great session that sounds really promising.  Also, we've had tracks for the Aldous Huxters record down for over a year. Will 2014 be the year when this project sees the light of day? I certainly hope so. A great collection of songs there that deserve to be heard.

Last but not least, 2014 will also the release of my first (studio) solo record since 2006's Never Shed No Tears.

More on this project in the weeks to come.

Add my live show schedule to all of these projects, and one might think I've got too much on my plate, but I say, "Bring it on!!".

Currently fundraising for my solo album on Sellaband. From now until the end of December, I will personally match any contribution towards this project. i want to wrap this up so I can concentrate on the music.

FMP Session : A Country Music Locomotive Chuggin' On Down The Line

Fiddle player Kevin Davidson's country home, on the outskirts of The Outlet, was the perfect setting for us to lay down tracks for what will be the debut record of The Foley Mountain Playboys. Keeping it simple, we just set up all in one room and ran through the songs...well, maybe it wasn't quite that simple, but I'll spare you the technical details. Anyway, we are all excited about what we were hearing through the headphones, and can't wait to make these songs available to you.

Bonz wore a most appropriate shirt for the occasion.
The band has definitely developed a sound, and for what it lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in sheer locomotive force. Every musician is performing their function to keep the machine moving, and it's the most fun I've had banging on the ol' acoustic guitar.Yeehaw!!

Look out for this record to be released in March 2014.

Foley Mountain Playboys Gearing up to record their debut album

The jams were kicking at the Rose & Crown last night. A live rehearsal of sorts, for the FMP recording session coming up this weekend. Gotta say, I'm pretty pumped about the future possibilities of this band. Things are sounding super-tight, and I think it is going to be one helluva record.

Looking forward to getting this record in the can, and getting out to play some shows for you fine folks. Toe-tappin', foot-stompin', heartbreakin', hard-drinkin', dance floor fillin' music.

The Foley Mountain Playboys  are (from left to right : Kevin Bowers,Geoff Chown, Kevin Davidson, Tom Savage. Not in photo : Bonz Bowering )

First up this weekend, Kevin Davidson and I have a couple of acoustic duo shows you might want to check out. First up, we are at one of our favourite places, The Acoustic Grill in Picton, ON. Call ahead to reserve your seat. Show starts at 7:00 PM.

Then Saturday, we are at Cousin's On King in Gananoque. Good food. Good beer. Weekend. Sounds good to me.

Danger Bird : Killer Jams at the Toucan

For those of you who missed out on our Neil Young tribute a couple weeks back at the Toucan, I present you with some auditory evidence of how seriously we rocked the night, in true Neil Young & Crazy Horse fashion. It was a thing of beauty(if you find loud, distorted guitars, and 10 minute jams beautiful).

A tip of the hat to Neil. Thanks for your music and your influence.

Best Of The Song A Week Challenge #2 : Another Comparison

It was interesting listening back to "49 More To Go" last week, and taking notice of the changes the song went through from the time it was written, to when it was recorded for "Overdrive Express". The first recording is more raw obviously, but you can also hear the newness of the song as well.

This week I thought I'd share with you a couple of more songs of the week that were recorded for "OverDrive Express" along with the first recordings.

Four months into the year, songwriter is meeting the challenge

Thought I'd repost this article from the Kingston Whig-Standard about the Song A Week Challenge here for folks following the blog. Thanks again to Tori Stafford for asking me to do the interview, and for doing such a great job writing the article.

Essentials
Where to check out Tom Savage this month:
Friday, May 11: The Tom Savage Trio at Brandees, 8 p.m.
Saturday, May 12: The Royal Tavern (as part of HomeGrown Music Festival), 8 p.m.
Friday, May 18: Acoustic Grill in Picton, 7 p.m.
Friday, May 25: The RCHA Club, 8 p.m.
 Saturday, May 26: The Toucan, 9 p.m.

Few people make a New Year’s resolution that lasts beyond the the month of January, and fewer still keep their resolution long enough for it to make any difference in their lives.
But for local musician and songwriter Tom Savage it was a New Year’s resolution that began what has now lasted 17 weeks — something few people, let alone musicians, would ever attempt to do.
And it all started as a joke.
Having played the night before, Savage arose on Jan. 1, 2012, “a little groggy” and announced his resolution.

“I said, ‘I’m going to write a song a day for the year,’ ” Savage recalled.
“And my resolution will be broken by tomorrow!”
His friend and fellow musician, Ross Neilsen of New Brunswick, suggested Savage would likely be able to tackle a song a week.

“I said, ‘Umm … all right, I think I could maybe do one a week,’ ” he said, hesitating even in recollection.

“I said, ‘I’ll think about that.’ ”

Savage smiles, recalling how it all began. After all, forced writing is a difficult challenge for any musician. And Savage is one of those musicians that normally writes a song over time, allowing it to steep and grow before putting pen to paper or pick to strings.

But, from that joke over coffee with his friends and family, the 2012 Song A Week Challenge was born.
Now, with 17 songs under his belt from the challenge, Savage said it was a resolution that is certainly broadening his musical horizons.

Born and raised in Westport, Savage is the son of two musicians, and the third generation of a family of piano teachers.

“My dad was touring around when I was little, too, for a little bit,” Savage said, noting that his father stuck to the folky, “Gordon Lightfoot-esque” tunes of the early ’70s.
“So definitely I had musical instruments around. And I sort of just latched onto that. That’s all I did in high school, basically,” said Savage.

“I’d play, like, six hours a day. I’d go into the music room at lunch hour, or on my spare, and then I’d come home, get something to eat, go in my room and play until I went to bed.”
That early training prepared Savage with the talent that would become his livelihood.

Savage is best known around town for a few things. His solo work is a folk-country-rock fusion that seeps of Bob Dylan-like lyrics with strong and catchy melodies that come back to you year after year.
He also heads up the Tom Savage Trio, whose sound he describes as “dirt road rock and roll,” and recently started up the Aldous Huxters, a side project with brothers Kevin and Pete Bowers. This band, he said, is an outlet for musical creativity that doesn‘t fit with any of his other work.

“I guess it’s more indy-folk-rock sound,” Savage said of the Aldous Huxters.

“ I had this pile of tunes and it’s just good to be able to play them now.”

Savage began playing for audiences at 18 years old. He’s recorded five albums, the last of which was in 2009. The only time he’s taken much of a break from playing was while he was “a stay-at-home-dad guy” when his son and daughter were still in diapers.

Now 10 and almost 7, his children, Zach and Bella, have caught the hereditary bug. Both have expressed desires to become musicians, Savage said.

“They say they want to be musicians, and I’m like, ‘No, you don’t,’ ” said Savage, laughing and leaning back in his chair. After all, Savage knows all too well the trials and tribulations of being a full-time musician.

“But, if they ever did, they’d be going in with their eyes open.”

It’s not surprising that Savage’s children ended up with the music bug. Not only does the music gene run in his family, Savage’s wife, Vanessa Longul, is a classically trained flutist who can seriously rock a jazz flute solo.

In fact, when the family was on the East Coast last year, Savage had what he refers to as the Savage Family Band, consisting of himself, Vanessa, his father and the two kids.

“Bella had the shakers. She sang back-up vocals, too. They do like five or six songs, but I think it was last spring that I told Zach, ‘If you learn some songs, I’ll pay you for the gig. I’ll pay you $20 if you play a set with me,’ ” Savage said, a modest-yet-proud father.
“And he did it.”

Savage’s son even learned the Hendrix classic All Along the Watchtower, which the pair played in the key of C. This way, Savage said, he could teach his son how to fake solo on the white keys of the piano.

“I gave him a little secret there, telling him, ‘You can’t play a wrong note if you stay on those white keys. We’re in the key of C. Just go for it!’ So he did.”

And when Savage isn’t playing around the city — he plays solo and with the trio often, and has a steady open mic night gig at The Rose and Crown on Wednesday nights — he tours the country, coast to coast.

In the last year, he has toured in Alberta five or six times, he said. The audiences there really appreciate his country-folk-rock sound, and the gigs pay well, too.

He also goes to the East Coast about once a year. Again, the grassroots sound he’s mastered is easily swallowed in the eastern provinces, and he likes to meet up with his musician friends out there as well.
But the 2012 Song A Week Challenge has expanded his repertoire, he said. Though he sticks with the genre he knows best for the most part, he doesn’t want the project to go stale and sound too similar, he said.

Through the weeks, he’s dabbled in blue grass, straight-up blues, and even tackled a barbershop-style tune in the most recent week.

And, apart from challenging him musically and lyrically on a weekly basis, the project has also drummed up some interest online, Savage said.

“People are interested. They seem to think it’s a cool idea,” Savage said, again with the modesty that allows him to be talented yet down to earth.

“I’m getting hits on the blog and stuff, so people are checking it out.”

Will he make it through the whole year?

“I think I can. I have friends, or, I guess fans, who have said that I can’t stop now. Even if it sucks, they say I have to post something every week!”

He is also about to go into the studio to record his sixth album of original songs, a couple of which were born from the Song A Week Challenge.
It’s projects like the Challenge, Savage said, that allow him to continue growing and developing as a musician — a career choice that isn’t always easy to live with.

“I don’t know if it has anything to do with Kingston. I think just being a musician in general is difficult … It’s extremely hard to make a living … I try not to think about it,” Savage said with a hearty laugh.

“When I was in my 20s, I’d tell people I was a musician and they’d say, ‘What else do you do?’
“Then, as I’ve become older, I tell people I’m a musician and they say, ‘Well, how do you do that?’
“Obviously I’ve been doing it a while, but you have to love it. You can’t be in it for the money.
“If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’ … I couldn’t do it.”
