14 year old Rocks Market Square

This summer my teenage daughter and I spent many hours practicing songs in order to build our repertoire to hit the streets of Kingston busking.

With only a year of bass lessons, she is a quick study. I anticipate we will see her performing with her own band in the years to come. As she recently stated, "it will be nice to play with people who aren't old." Here is a short video of Bella on bass, Bonz Bowering on drums and myself this past Labour Day in market square.

For much of the past decade, I've traveled around Canada and the USA performing solo. Me and my guitar (or guitars rather...occasionally mandolin) up on stage, or in someone's living room, without a net. After touring with a band for many years, it was definitely a big change. It took some time to develop my approach to performing solo, and the kind of energy I wanted to bring to the stage. Ironically, in the end, I found approaching a solo show in the same way as a full band concert was the way to go. The thing is, I didn't have the band to help create that energy with me, so it required a commitment from myself to push that force out into the crowd each and every night. It also needed me to approach the playing of my acoustic guitar in a more aggressive, percussive fashion. Playing chunky rhythms and lead licks simultaneously.

East Coast Tour + New Solo Album Coming Soon!

New Solo Album on the Horizon

I've been touring pretty heavy over the past few years ( okay, well, almost a decade now) as a solo artist. I've put a lot of time and effort into my approach as a solo performer, altering my playing style to incorporate a more percussive attack, adding bass lines and lead riffs into the mix. Basically, pulling as much sound as I can out of an acoustic guitar. To document the results of this creative journey, I went into NOP studio in Kingston recently to lay down some tracks. Ended up recording 21 songs. I've combed through those selections to narrow it down to a ten song album set to be released this fall. As usual, I will be touring to Vancouver and back in September to support the release, and upon my return to Kingston, we will have an official release party at The Mansion on October 24th, supported by The Mill Rights, and Dead Root Revival. Mark that one on your calendar!

Speaking of Dead Root Revival...

The other side of my creative output this past year, Dead Root Revival has been busy playing shows, tweaking old songs, and adding new ones. We are having a lot of fun reviving the roots of music some may have thought dead. ; )

Our goal with DRR is to focus on four genres: Blues/Rock/Funk/Soul...okay, maybe five. Jazz as well. Elements of these genres appear in our songs. Sometimes all five in the same song. Makes for some fulfilling musical moments.

We also look to collaborate with other artists. Bring them into the DRR family. Recently , we shot a video with our friend Chris Rio. We first heard him sing at the Frozen Roots fundraiser for Joe's MILL in February. Coincidentally, I had written "Good Morning Love" the week before, and thought Chris would be perfect singing lead vocal on the song. Check it out!

Planting the Seeds and Reviving Dead Roots

It was another successful run out to Vancouver and back in September and October, albeit with more snow than I've ever seen on a Western Tour in the Fall. I missed the 30 cm dumping that Calgary received by a day, but managed to enjoy a six hour drive through a snowstorm in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Two tracks for the tires to fit into with a foot of snow in between and on either side. An adventure with the all seasons on. Kept my distance from the cars fish-tailing in front of me and all was good.

Thanks to everyone who hosted and promoted shows, shared the stage with me, fed and watered me, and gave me a place to lay my weary bones. I couldn't do it without you!

Dead Root Revival
Many musical happenings in November, kicking off with the first shows for a new band. From the ashes of what was the Tom Savage Trio, comes Dead Root Revival. A change in band name and a change in musical direction. Leaving the Country-Rock sound that fans became familiar with from The County Line (2008), and focusing more on a hard edge Blues sound, with elements of Rock and Jazz, and introducing more instrumental numbers into the set list.

We head out on the road for a few shows this weekend in Simcoe, Sarnia, and Toronto. Check out the facebook page for event details.

Another reason for the name change is to allow us to have more than three people in the band. I'm hoping that Dead Root Revival will end up being a music collective, where musicians will come to share the stage from time-to-time, and contribute to the material. The first opportunity for this will be when Tony Silvestri joins us on keyboards for our show at The Wooden Boat Shop in Gananoque on Saturday, November 24th.

I'm excited to be taking part in "The Music Biz" workshop on Saturday afternoon, and performing (with full band) at the concert finale. The Tom Savage Trio may be no more, but the music lives on...even if it is out of print. I sold out of the Overdrive Express album while on tour (contemplating another pressing), and I sold out of The County Line long ago ( no plans for another pressing). Recently, however, I've added The County Line to NoiseTrade for free download ( with an option to leave a tip for Joe's M.I.L.L. which I do encourage). Review of 'The County Line' from Americana Roots
Kingston, Ontario’s Tom Savage fourth studio album called The County Line recently founds its way to my ears. Even though it is a 2008 release it deserves your attention if you haven’t heard it. This is the first release under the Tom Savage Trio name. The trio consists of Tom Savage – guitar, vocals and mandolin; Geoff Chown – bass; and Sandy Mackenzie -drums, backing vocals. Think of them as a modern day Americana power trio, at least on this disc. While previous releases from Tom (solo) have been more acoustic, this disc is plugged in and rowdy!

There are nine high octane cuts on the disc, which opens in a hurry with Leaving In A Hurry. The highlight of the disc is the title track, with a guitar attack I imagine must be great to hear live! Perhaps speaking of himself, or maybe some of his obvious influences (Neil Young) is the line from the track Old Rock ‘N’ Rollers:
“Old rock ‘n’ rollers never die, they just keep rollin’ on”

The only time they slow down for a breath is on Tired Old Cliche. Then its back to full speed and on the road for 48 Hours. Then like a good power trio, they end with the lengthy tune Arizona, which features a long power chord fade out ending that even does fade out and return! I held up my lighter when it was done!!

If you like your Americana amped up, i.e. The Bottle Rockets or Drive-By-Truckers then you are sure to like this disc, yet another stellar release from our neighbors to the North! -Don Zelazny

New Album on the Horizon

It's been an excruciatingly busy time over the past few months. This is good though. The April US tour was a heavy one and a bit of a hard slog. Many a Walmart parking lot and too much fast food. The schedule was chock full and there was not much time for sightseeing...unless you count the interstate rest stops. Such is the glitz and the glamour of the independent touring musician. That said, many interesting characters met and many songs to be harvested. And that is a very important factor for why touring is important. Honing the craft, shaping the songs, and finding the stories. It damn sure ain't about the money.

Speaking of songs and stories, upon returning from the US tour I headed into North Of Princess Studios the last week of April to record with my good friends Tony Silvestri, Bonz Bowering, and Seamus Cowan. A lot of it live off the floor, it was a spirited session, and I think you all will be very pleased with the results. It's a bit of a different direction for me and I hope you are all willing to take the trip. The album is scheduled for an official release in October, but I hope to have copies available for MUSICWestport in August (where I'll be performing with the band) and for my Canadian Tour in September.

Early May saw the release of Al Duquette's new record, Tales of the Wild West. A project I had the pleasure of acting as producer on. Al has lived a life and his experience and authenticity comes through in the way he delivers his songs. There is no pretence here. A beautiful collection of songs that will fit nicely between Hank and Lefty on the shelf. Head over to Bandcamp and download your copy today.

Early June was all about the East Coast of Canada. Always good to get down there and catch up with friends, and perform for friendly faces. Highlight of the tour was a Monday night concert in a little church in Alma, NS. Google didn't even know where it was! Great acoustics and good vibes.

Interstate Breakdown Tour (USA) - April 2017

Canadian guitarist and songwriter, Tom Savage, is embarking on another tour of the Eastern US, and bringing his high-energy show and big guitar sound to stops from Portland, Maine to Nashville, Tennessee and points in between.

Tom Savage is what one might refer to as a triple-threat. One part truth-telling troubadour, one part death-defying guitar slinger, and one part Country Blues howler. Each facet of his formidable on-stage persona carefully crafted over a 20+ year devotion to the composition and performance of song. Tom is a true believer. A disciple of melody and harmony and tempo and timbre. An evangelist preaching to anyone who will listen of the healing and meditative powers of music. Pouring his heart out of his throat every night, while simultaneously shredding his fingertips in his relentless assault on the beat-up 1966 Guild acoustic he adores.

Back on Canadian soil, and it feels so good...

...though the temperature leaves a little to be desired.

I have to confess to being somewhat apprehensive about this recent tour, given the political climate in the USA, but it turned out to be just what I needed to give me proper perspective. Turning off the news( because in the US, news is a term to use loosely. Thank God For The CBC!) and talking to actual Americans on the ground gave me hope for the future. Everyone I met were generally good, caring people, and while it is hard to understand why a Trump supporter supports Trump, I tried my best. But to be honest, most of the people I talked to did not support Trump, and the fact that I am Canadian, I think, allowed them to express this point of view. And I'm talking the cashier at the grocery store, the hotel worker, the gas attendant, offering up their opinions. Expressing their fear of what is happening and what is to come. Numerous people joked about hitching a ride up to Canada in my van.

But they're staying put. They're fighting the fight. And if the world is lucky, America will come out the other side of this mess a more caring, open, socially-progressive society, that is welcoming of all immigrants and people of difference. The way I see it, those who voted for Trump fear the future. Those who voted against him are the future.

New album is a wrap! Canadian tour on the horizon!

It has been a hectic summer for me. Between performances, bookings, and working on the new record, it's a lot to keep straight.. Wow! My head is spinning! I'm looking forward to getting on the road for the singular focus it provides me. Next town. Next show. Next place to crash. Repeat.

That being said, I am incredibly excited about this new record. I'm very proud of how it has turned out and I can't wait to share it with all of you. Geoff & I have been painstakingly dotting every "i"and crossing every "t", and I think we have come away with something special.

It would be very much appreciated. This is my first solo tour in quite some time, and I am seeking out different types of venues to perform in. With TST,  we had a pretty good circuit going, but it was quite dependent on "bringing the noise" for the most part, so a lot of those venues won't be appropriate for the show I will be touring.

We are in the process of recording my new solo album right now. They are a fine collection of songs, and I am really excited about the outcome of this work. To be honest, it's the most jazzed I've been about a creative project in a long time. I think it's going to be something special and I can't wait to get out on the road and share it with all of you this September.

A little bit late getting this song posted. Lots of music happenings this past week messed with my schedule. I'm thinking a month-long tour is going to mess with my writing schedule even more.

49 More To Go - Live at the Alton Mill Arts Centre

Thought I'd share this video with you from the show the other night. I explain to the audience about the Song A Week Challenge, and play the song "49 More To Go". I shot this with my ipod. I was testing out this cool little 'ipod tripod' that I bought off of EBay for $5. A neat little contraption. Just clamp your ipod/iphone in it, and then you can position it a lot more easily for catching video or photos.


Anyway, as you can see from the video, the Alton Mill Arts Centre is a pretty neat venue. Musicians looking for gigs in the Orangeville area should keep it in mind. We had an intimate crowd on this night, so it felt a bit like a small house concert.

Great response for the shows I did with David Celia, so it'll be fun to do some more down the road.

Tour Report week # 4

The fourth and final week of the tour played out pretty much exactly like the song "Northern Ontario Highway". Wednesday night we were at The Standard in Winnipeg, joining Andrew Neville & The Poor Choices for their weekly foot-stompin', beer-swillin', good time. Steve Brockley was on the bill as well, and it made for a great night of music. Our best Winnipeg show ever actually.

Thursday, we were back in Wabigoon for an acoustic show. John landed his plane to check out a set, and I got to see my old friend Guy Galloway, so it was a lot of fun. The good news is that, even though John has sold the store, the new owner is very enthusiastic about keeping the music going. That means a lot of great entertainment stopping in for folks that live in the area.

Friday, we were back at the Apollo one more time for some of Sheila's famous veggie burgers. Saturday we were at Loplops, which turned out to be a great night. Thanks to Porter for opening, even though they'd already been playing all day ( a series of mini-sets for a fundraiser that was happening).

And Sunday, we were back at the townehouse. The band room may not have felt like the Four points Sheraton, but it has its own unique charm.

Great tour. Good times. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen.

Another Successful Tour!

Having just gotten back home from our Western swing, I thought I'd share a few thoughts with you on the tour, which just so happened to be our most successful to date.

As usual, we met lots of great folks on our travels, and played with some talented musicians. Porter, Chris Carmichael, Bad House Highway, Mark Waterman, Wheat and Water, and JD Edwards. Great to be able to share the stage with you guys. Also, thanks to Mark and JD for letting us crash at your houses.

Highlights of the tour included our stop in Twin Butte (I still can't get over how amazing that place is), our show at the Palomino in Calgary (which showed indicators of all of our hard work beginning to pay off in that city), climbing the big hill behind the Last Chance Saloon (I wasn't too crazy about doing at the time, but now at least I can say that I've done it), and drinking whiskey shots through the crazy ice sculpture thing at JD Edwards house (too funny).

Performance-wise, this tour went well. With Chris McDonald (Liquorbox) on drums, we seemed to veer into more of the jam band tendencies, that we were already developing. It makes more for a good live show, and makes me think that the next TST album will be an interesting process.

Also had the thought of releasing a series of live bootleg albums.

Thanks to all of the newspapers that helped to promote the shows, as well as CKUA radio for getting behind us. Also, big thanks to Al at CFNO radio in Marathon, ON.

Tour starts tomorrow...

...with the driving. We don't actually have a show on Thursday, just packing up the van, and putting in some hours on the road.

First show is Friday at Loplops in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. One of the coolest venues in the country, in my opinion, and a great way to start things off.
